WE-Empower

A year-round mentorship program for women and underrepresented principal investigators, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students covering tech transfer and commercialization, intellectual property and entrepreneurship.

About the Program

WE-Empower will cover the fundamental principles of: 

1. Technology Transfer and Research Commercialization: Researchers will be provided programming on technology transfer, research commercialization and tools needed to develop a research project from bench side to bedside. In addition, researchers will be given 1:1 support from a dedicated Business Development Manager at WORLDiscoveries to explore their own research programs and discuss potential projects for commercialization. 

2. Intellectual Property Education and Market Assessment: Participants will receive training and support in starting a company, building a team, and bringing their product to market. Various aspects of entrepreneurship which include market research, value proposition, pitching, developing minimum viable products, business modeling, building a viable financial model for a startup, fundraising and marketing strategy will be covered.

3. Entrepreneurship: Participants will receive training and support in starting a company, building a team and bringing their product to market. Various aspects of entrepreneurship will be covered including: market research, value proposition, pitching, developing minimum viable products, business modeling, building a viable financial model for your startup, fundraising and marketing strategy.

4. Networking and Mentorship: Participants will be paired with industry leaders and seasoned entrepreneurs and mentors throughout the program.

Mission

The WE-Empower program aims to form an allyship with Principal Inventors, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, staff and entrepreneurs who identify as women in the technology sector; or as Indigenous; or are from diverse and under-represented groups. With the mission to fill the gap that currently exists within our innovation ecosystem by providing entrepreneurship support and training, and research commercialization to innovate and promote the development of new technologies.

Souzan Armstrong

Souzan is the Executive Director for WORLDiscoveries, leading a team of commercialization professionals that help researchers take their innovations to market. Souzan holds a PhD in Biochemistry.

Saqib Sachani

Saqib Sachani

Saqib Sachani is a Business Development Manager for the Life Sciences at WORLDiscoveries. Saqib holds a PhD in Biochemistry, Developmental Biology and Epigenetics from Western University and is an MBA candidate at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Susan Jacobs is the Program Specialist, WE-Empower at WORLDiscoveries. Susan aspires to empower women and underrepresented minority groups to build the future for generations of innovative leaders to come.
