Western University: Growing The Ontario Economy

The Ontario government has set up an Expert Panel on Intellectual Property with the mandate of the panel being to protect home-grown innovation and maximize commercialization. The panel is looking at various opportunities to improve in the post-secondary education sector including at incubators, accelerators, technology transfer offices, and innovation centres.

The panel is looking to make recommendations to the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to improve the generation and commercialization of research and intellectual property.

The panel with expertise spanning the innovation, intellectual property and entrepreneurship spectrum consists of:

  • Jim Balsillie, retired Chairman and Co-CEO of Research In Motion (now Blackberry), Co-founder of the Council of Canadian Innovators, and Founder and Chair of the Centre for International Governance Innovation
  • Dr. Shiri Breznitz, Associate Professor of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, University of Toronto
  • Myra Tawfik, EPICentre Professor of Intellectual Property Commercialization and Strategy, University of Windsor
  • Dr. Dan Herman, Vice-President of Strategy and Partnerships, Myant Inc.
  • Natalie Raffoul, BESc’01, Managing Partner of Brion Raffoul Intellectual Property Law

Since the panel’s incorporation in May, they have interacted with various stakeholders including post-secondary institutions through questionnaires and consultations. The panel is expected to deliver a final report in December of 2019 to the Ontario government.

Western undertook the preparation of this briefing, Western University: Growing The Ontario Economy and submitted the document to the panel in September of 2019.

The brief is a collection of all of the activities, programs, resources and successes from Western’s entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem.
