Responsibilities

The Business Development Manager leads, develops and implements strategies to enhance commercialization of intellectual property created by Western faculty, postdoctoral fellows, students and staff and provides support in matters related to industrial interactions and intellectual property management. The incumbent will establish relationships in order to solicit new innovations for WORLDiscoveries, seek out commercialization opportunities and maintain relationships with industry, partners and other stakeholders in order to reinforce and advance the reputation of Western and WORLDiscoveries locally, nationally and internationally.

WORLDiscoveries is the technology transfer office that commercializes research from Western University, Robarts Research Institute, and Lawson Health Research Institute (London’s local hospitals). WORLDiscoveries assists researchers in commercializing their discoveries through licensing to existing companies and creating new companies (spinoffs). Status: Full-time (35 hr/week), 6 month internship contract.

Duties:

  • Assist in the preparation of marketing material and grant applications.
  • Support the team in managing day-to-day activities.
  • Respond to ad hoc requests, as required.

 
Learning Opportunities:

  • Training in technology commercialization and spinoff company creation.
  • Shadow and assist the team during patent filing/prosecution activities. General office duties and office work experience.

 
Requirements:

  • Graduate degree in neuroscience related field.
  • Experience or interest in business or entrepreneurship.
  • Some familiarity with intellectual property, or the aptitude to grasp the concepts of intellectual property protection.
  • Ability to understand complex technical documents.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Highly organized, with excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively and meet tight deadlines.
