The Business Development Officer, WORLDiscoveries Asia (WD Asia) will support the development and implementation of strategies to build and expand a network of business clients among University Technology Transfer Offices (TTO), research institutions, and hi-tech small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) across Ontario and Canada, with an aim for WD Asia to represent and promote a robust portfolio of Canadian innovation projects and technologies in Asia for potential partnerships with Asian industry and investment community. In collaboration with the Director, WD Asia, the incumbent will seek out business opportunities and maintain relationships with Canadian organizations who have an interest in pursuing research and development based partnerships and gaining access to the local markets in Asia.

The Executive Director will lead the development and implementation of strategic plans, and manage the allocation and reporting of financial, human and physical resources to support WORLDiscoveries locations. The incumbent will identify opportunities for process improvements, and design and/or revise practices, implement and/or expand training or program offerings, with appropriate controls, to ensure that risks are mitigated.  The Executive Director will develop an extensive knowledge of sector-specific market knowledge and business development expertise, local, national and international opportunities, and third party, such as industry, connections. The incumbent will help facilitate the achievement of strategic plans, develop new partnerships and assist creators, such as faculty, staff or students, other Canadian research organizations and SMEs, commercialize their discoveries through licensing, new company spin-offs, funding opportunities, investment, direct-to-market or distribution channels.

The Organic Mechatronics and Smart Materials Laboratory is currently seeking a qualified Postdoctoral Associate for an appointment beginning as soon as possible, and lasting approximately 12 months.

Classification & Regular Hours

We are seeking 6-8 Fellows for an appointment beginning in July 2021, and lasting approximately 10 months.

Salary:    $3,918.12 per month – no benefits

Responsibilities

The Business Development Manager leads, develops and implements strategies to enhance commercialization of intellectual property created by Western faculty, postdoctoral fellows, students and staff and provides support in matters related to industrial interactions and intellectual property management under the area of Life Sciences.  The incumbent will establish relationships in order to solicit new innovations for WORLDiscoveries, seek out commercialization opportunities and maintain relationships with industry, partners and other stakeholders in order to reinforce and advance the reputation of Western and WORLDiscoveries locally, nationally and internationally.

Responsibilities

The Patent and Market Analyst is responsible for analyzing the feasibility of protecting inventions that are disclosed to WORLDiscoveries®, as well as providing key intelligence on market environment and opportunities.  In collaboration with Business Development Managers (BDMs), faculty members, students, staff and administration, the incumbent is responsible for matters related to intellectual property (IP), market research, and other related topics.  The Analyst provides support for grant application writing for multiple funding agency programs (CIHR-POP, NSERC-i2i, and Western Innovation Fund), establishing relationships with BDMs, faculty, library services, and other stakeholders in order to obtain appropriate information and by utilizing their knowledge of databases and other information resources.
